Google Does Some Overdue Buzz Branding with New Buttons
Share |

Google has introduced some new Buzz buttons for content providers to use. There are buttons to allow users to share content through Buzz without leaving the site they're on, and buttons that easily allow a reader to follow a publication on Buzz.

So far, sites have had to make their own buttons, which have been tied to Google Reader, but now anyone can go here and simply create their own Buzz Buttons that Buzz user can use (even if they don't use Google Reader).

Google Buzz Buttons

"A number of sharing platforms, including ShareThis, Meebo, Shareholic, AddThis and AddtoAny have also incorporated the Google Buzz button into their sharing functionality, so you'll see Buzz listed as a choice when you go to share something on many other sites around the web as well," notes Product Manager Mussie Shorek.

If you want to create a "Post to Buzz" button, you can pick the style (choose from three options), location of post count (top or side), language, URL to post, and image to post (can be customized). Google will then give you the proper code to add.

You can then test the button by reloading the page you put it on, making sure it shows up, and clicking to see the posting box users will see. You can also customize the parameters in the URL that shows up for the landing page.

For the "Follow on Buzz" button, just plug in your profile URL, and you'll get the code to add it.

The release of these buttons could actually be a significant factor in keeping the "buzz" going around Buzz. If more site adopt them, which they likely will since they don't ha/> [...]

StartupRoots Plays Matchmaker for Startups and College Interns
Share |

startuproots_apr10.jpgWhile there aren't nearly enough, there are several incubator programs out there for startups in most of the major cities with thriving startup cultures. These programs provide early-stage companies with funding, mentoring, and workspace among other aid, but there are very few programs that help college students looking for internships in the startup space to get connected with the companies that need their help. One incubator program, StartupRoots, is looking to change this trend with a brand new program aimed at brining students and startups together, and they're starting in startup mecca: Silicon Valley.

For computer science and business students who are looking to cut their teeth with a young startup, or for early-stage startups in need of some bright interns to help kick things in gear, the deadline to apply is this Thursday at midnight, so here are the details on the program. StartupRoots is a 10 week program running from June to August that consists of three main parts for students: a non-paid internship with a startup, mentoring from weekly speakers, and networking with company execs and fellow interns.

StartupRoots already has several notable speakers lined up to participate in the program, including Steve Blank, Jeff Clavier, Robert Scoble, Ann Miura-Ko, Hiten Shah and Vivek Wadhwa. Last week I spoke with Gagan Biyani of StartupRoots who says that the program helps to level the playing field for students smaller companies competing with larger companies with rec/> [...]

YouTube Introduces New Tool for Advertisers
YouTube has recently launched a new tool that allows advertisers to have more control on where their ads appear to even the choice of videos they want them to appear with. The new targeting options will allow advertisers to choose Keywords, Viewer Demographics, Interest-Based categories or a combo of all three. This is still currently in beta and for those advertisers that work closely with YouTube’s sales reps, you can check it out by logging into your google’s account via google.com/videotargeting

As Facebook continues to take over the web in a variety of other ways, the social network is preparing to launch a new Q&A feature.

"We think it will be as exciting as Facebook Photos and Facebook Events, but we need your help to make it great," Facebook says.

The company is inviting beta testers to ask questions and provide answers about their favorite topics. "Your expert writing will be seen by tens of millions of people — including job recruiters," the company says on the beta test application page. "And we'll bring our best beta testers out to California to tour Facebook headquarters and meet the team."

Beta testers are required to submit three questions and their respective answers. Facebook asks that applicants choose "provocative questions" and that they write about things they know, providing "detailed, articulate answers."

Facebook Q&A application

A few sample questions they include are:

- How can I get over my fear of flying?
- What are some fun family activities to do with two small children on the weekend.
- What caused the U.S. stock market to crash in 2009?

Q&A services have been around for a long time, but the space has been picking up a lot of steam lately, particularly with its relationship to local businesses, and consumers using their mobile devices to find out information about those businesses on the fly.

The sheer number of Facebook users would give this product an advantage over other competing Q&A sites. The /> [...]
